This guide walks you through transferring a domain from GoDaddy to StellerHost. Follow these tasks carefully to ensure a smooth transfer.

Transfer Tasks

1. Verify Domain Name Eligibility

Ensure your domain is eligible for transfer:

  • The domain name has been registered for at least 60 days and has been at GoDaddy for at least 60 days.
  • Registrant contact information has not changed in the past 60 days.
  • The domain is not in "client update prohibited" status.

2. Update Administrative Contact Information

Before transferring, make sure the Administrative contact information (especially the email address) is up-to-date at GoDaddy. This contact will receive and approve the transfer request.

Note: Do not change the Registrant contact information before the transfer, as GoDaddy will consider this an internal transfer and reject transfer requests for 60 days.

Steps to update the Administrative contact at GoDaddy:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account.
  2. Go to the Domains menu and click My Domain Names.
  3. Select the domain you want to transfer.
  4. Scroll to the Administrative contact section and click Edit if needed.
  5. Update the information and click OK.

3. Obtain the Authorization Code (EPP Key)

An authorization code is required for most domain transfers (e.g., .com, .net, .org).

Steps to get the EPP Code from GoDaddy:

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account.
  2. Go to My Domain Names and select the domain you want to transfer.
  3. In the Domain Information section, find the Authorization Code row and click Send by Email.
  4. Confirm and check your email for the authorization code.

4. Unlock the Domain Name

The domain must be unlocked for transfer.

Steps to unlock a domain at GoDaddy:

  1. Go to My Domain Names and select the domain to transfer.
  2. In the Domain Information section, locate the Locked row.
  3. Click Manage, select Unlock Domain, and click OK.

5. Transfer the Domain Name to StellerHost

Once the domain is ready at GoDaddy, you can initiate the transfer at StellerHost.

Steps to transfer your domain to StellerHost:

  1. Log in to your StellerHost account.
  2. Go to Domains > Transfer a Domain Name.
  3. Choose a transfer method:
    • Auto Verification (preferred for small transfers).
    • Fax Verification (recommended for bulk transfers).
  4. Enter the domain name(s) and their corresponding authorization codes in this format:

    ExampleDomain.com, AUTHCODE AnotherDomain.com, AUTHCODE
  5. Configure options:
    • Registrar Lock: Choose whether to enable/disable post-transfer.
    • Auto-Renew: Enable to prevent future expiration.
    • Whois Update: Decide whether to retain current Whois info or use updated info.
    • Access Password: Optional for additional domain management controls.
  6. Follow on-screen instructions to complete the transfer request.

Approving the Transfer

After submitting the transfer request at StellerHost:

  • The domain’s Registrant and Administrative contact will receive an email from StellerHost asking for approval.
  • Follow the instructions in the email to confirm the transfer.

Tracking Your Transfer

Once the transfer request is submitted, StellerHost will provide status updates. Monitor these to track the progress or address any issues.

If the Transfer Is Rejected

If your transfer is rejected, review ICANN rules on transfer rejections to determine the issue and resolve it. Common reasons include:

  • Domain lock still active.
  • Incorrect authorization code.
  • Changes to Registrant contact details within 60 days.
